How To Make Your Own Snakes And Ladders

This is a super easy task to do at home with children or by yourself. You can make this as fun as you want or as simple as you like. You can change up the rules for yourself and add in as many snakes and ladders as you like.

If you are looking at making other board games check out my post of how to make your own monopoly board.

This is a wonderful creative task to do with children or as a family throughout the day and then play the game in the evening.

Step One

Start by measuring 15 inches by 15 inches. This square will create the main base of your snakes and ladders board game.

Do this by using a pencil and ruler to mark along 15 inches on your cardboard.

Join up the marks to create a solid line. Cut along this line to remove any excess cardboard.

Tip: If you don’t have a cereal box look at using a box from an Amazon delivery or check your recycling bin, or you can ask your neighbours.

Step Two

I decided to stick to the top level and the number of 100. If you are playing with smaller children then you can reduce the number to 50 and make the squares bigger.

I made each square 1.5 inches by 1.5 inches.

I started by marking along the 1.5 inches along one edge and then create a solid line.

Repeat for the other side to create squares.

Tip: I drew my lines in pen so it would show up on the pictures but you want to use a pencil so you can rub out some of the lines later on.

Step Three

The next step is to draw on your snakes and your ladders.

Remember that your ladders want to go from one square to another.

And your snakes want to snake down from one square to another one.

Tip: Don’t forget to rub out your lines behind the snakes ready for colouring in.

Step Four

Get Colouring!

This is the most fun part is you can be as creative as you like. I decided to use 2 colours on my snakes and a sharpie for my ladders.

Leave the colouring to the children and let their imagination go wild.

After you have coloured in the snakes you can move on to colouring in the squares. Alternate the colours to make it super fun, colourful and exciting.

Tip: Don’t worry about being neat, it’s all just fun at the end of the day.

Step Six

Use a sharpie or biro to draw over the lines for the squares. This will help make it a little more defined and brighter.

Step Seven

Now add numbers, I put “start” on the first square to give it a little bit more of a game feel.

  • You can make dice from a paper box pattern or borrow from another game.
  • Find small figures and household items around the home for counters.

That is everything for how to make your own snakes and ladders. I hope you have found this helpful and hope you have loads of fun making a new game.
