A key element to quilting is creating a sturdy base which often means bonding multiple layers together. This can often mean using bonding agents such as iron on fusible webs and basting sprays.

Basting sprays can make quilting and sewing projects easier and faster by holding fabric layers in place without the need for pins or thread.

The best basting sprays are those which are lightweight, odourless and non staining. Many basting sprays hit all three factors but some can still cause staining or may dissolve when washing.

I scoured to find the best basting sprays use to give you all the holding power you need without having to spend too long searching for the perfect one for the project. When choosing a basting spray, consider the type of fabric you will be working with, as some sprays may not be suitable for certain materials.

1. Odif 505AD Basting Spray

The Odif basting spray is one of the best basting sprays you can use for quilting and sewing. One of its qualities is that it is odourless and colourless. It is a time saver as it makes your quilting process easier.

It is easy to use, even if it’s your first time to use it, you will not find it problematic to glue the pieces of fabric together. It is easy to pull apart and reposition the pieces if you need to slightly adjust your work.

The Odif basting spray is a great too to use for quilting as you go projects that require pieces to hold in place while you work.

Always test a small area of the fabric before applying the spray to a large area, to ensure that it does not damage or discolour the fabric.

✅ Permanent, clear & easy to use

❌ Hard to hand quilt with this spray.

2. Crafters Companion Spray & Stay

Crafters Companion spray and stay is the perfect companion to any quilting project as it is lightweight, easy to use and odourless. It is mostly used on tools such as rulers and quilting guides to stop them from slipping but it can also be used on fabric.

The spray and stick spray is a temporary adhesive making it perfect for projects that need holding in place. The only downside to using this spray on fabric is that it isn’t permanent and may result in the fabrics moving eventually. It will also not withstand washing so make sure your fabrics are sewn in place before washing.

If you are new to spray basting, you don’t have to worry because this product is easy to use. If your quilt will need repositioning, this product will allow you to do so and then stick your fabrics again with ease.

✅ Great for using on tools to create a tacky base.

❌ Not strong enough to use as a long lasting permanent spray.

3. June Tailor Basting Spray

The June Tailor basting spray will provide you with instant stick with your layers of fabric and batting. This product will help save you time from pinning and tacking layers of fabric together and provides accurate hold on the layers.

The spray works very well with cotton based fabrics over other fabrics. It’s also important to take note that the bond created by the spray is temporary so you can always reposition quilt layers whenever you need to do so.

The temporary bond on the layers is great if you want the hold but not the permanent effect. This is great if you are binding the layers permanently with quilting techniques.

It is a colourless and odourless product. It’s worth noting that it dries clear and it won’t gum your needle during machine quilting. The disadvantage of this product is that it is flammable, so you have to be very careful with it.

✅ Clear, non staining and lightweight.

❌ Not suitable for multiple washes and not permanent.

4. 3M DisplayMount Multi-Purpose Spray Adhesive

Scotch 3M DisplayMount adhesive spray is perfect for using on fabrics as it is clear, non staining and doesn’t stiffen over time. The spray is perfect for binding batting with fabric and fabric layers together due to the lightweight properties.

The sprays are commonly used for mounting materials such as card and paper to other lightweight materials but this is a tried and tested spray.

The spray is also easy to use and works great when repositioning layers as it keeps the stickiness without fixing straight away in a permanent placement.

The only downside to using the spray is that it may become loose and unstuck when washed repeatedly.

✅ Clear, non staining and lightweight.

❌ Not suitable for all fabrics as it is mainly used for paper and card, using on tougher fabrics and cottons. Don't use on delicate fabrics such as satin and silk.

5. Thermoweb Spray N Bond

Thermoweb Spray N Bond basting spray is a temporary hold spray perfect for quilted projects. One of the advantages is that it will help you hold your quilt layers temporarily before quilting them permanently.

It is possible for you to reposition your fabric the way you want and remove any wrinkles that might appear on it. Of great importance still, it does not gum up needles, thus sewing won’t be a problem to you.

The disadvantage with this product is that if you fail to store it well, it might clog up and not give you quality results.

✅ Lightweight and clear, great for all types of fabrics.

❌ Not permanent.
